The modelling of existing buildings with BIM faces the challenge of finding a balance between the most accurate, realistic ("deformation-compliant") representation possible and an idealized, simplified model geometry. Depending on the intended use, the digital model can either depict the complex shapes and deviations of the building or be used as an abstracted version with right angles and parallel walls to facilitate further processing and readability. This generalization decision significantly influences the efficiency and informative value of BIM modelling in the context of old buildings.
Idealized model
In many cases, subsequent process steps require idealized or generalized plans or plan bases of an existing object. This is where the rmDATA Reailty3D software platform (previously rmDATA 3DWorx) offers some essential automation for generalization and the creation of BIM elements. This makes it one of the most efficient tools for deriving relevant geometries from laser scans.
Generalization of the line direction for automatic line derivation
rmDATA Reality3D derives lines from point cloud sections and processes them as vector data. If required, the software automatically rotates detected lines on the basis of a preset step size. Right angles and parallel lines are calculated while retaining the error statements.
Directional rounding when creating BIM elements
The rmDATA Reality3D software platform automatically creates BIM elements from a point cloud with just one click. An important function in terms of generalizing a model is directional rounding. The software optionally rounds the geometric direction of generated objects to an adjustable angle grid. This creates idealized angles during creation, which can be optimally processed in the subsequent BIM system. Directional rounding is also available for 2D lines as a plan basis. >> Also watch our video on this topic.
