Precision and efficiency in construction surveying: Dreihans GmbH sets new standards with laser scanning

“After many years of manual measuring—later also with Disto and theodolite—the 3D laser scanner is a major step forward for us,” explains Thomas Kasper of the construction company Dreihans GmbH. The increasing demand for renovations, conversions, and extensions, especially in the private sector, required an innovative solution for precise and time-saving building measurements.

Increased efficiency through modern technology

The implementation of rmDATA 3DWorx as evaluation software proved to be the key to success. Its seamless integration into existing laser scanning processes and user-friendly operation were convincing from the start. “What immediately impressed me about the software was how easy and fast it is to import data from the point cloud and derive geometries,” reports Kasper. The automatic detection of beams and supports in attic conversions in particular proves to be a unique advantage.

Planning expert Regina Gabriel-Wakolbinger adds: “This gives us a major time and competitive advantage.” The Open BIM workflow with automatic derivation of door and window elements significantly speeds up further processing in ArchiCAD. The team particularly appreciates the continuous development of the software and the consideration of customer requests.

Economic success through precision

“The acquisition costs for laser scanners and software are high, but this is offset by increased efficiency and reduced rework,” emphasizes Thomas Kaspar. “The long-term cost savings achieved through more precise planning make the investment absolutely worthwhile.”

A concrete example illustrates the efficiency: When adding another story to a multi-unit building, precise preliminary planning enabled a high degree of prefabrication. The team defined exact support points in the grid, prepared everything in the factory, and was able to close the roof gap quickly and efficiently with the timber construction.

Opening up new business areas

The combination of laser scanning and rmDATA 3DWorx opens up new business opportunities for the company, especially in renovation projects and the inventory of historic or difficult-to-access buildings. Other trades also benefit from the precise data. For example, during the installation of an elevator, the verticality of the facade could be analyzed precisely and the data transmitted directly to the elevator manufacturer.

With this technological focus, Dreihans GmbH has established itself as an innovative partner for demanding construction projects and is setting new standards in the construction industry.
